Improving Yesteryear Models

By John Hall

I specialise in renovating and improving old, ready made proprietary models and kits from the 1960s.  As a teenage modeller I recall the awe I felt reading those articles  in 'Railway Modeller' and 'Constructor' showing how members of the modelling deity had improved or converted such and such a Tri-ang or Hornby Dublo loco, or reading the reviews of the latest Wills kits.   I then lacked the finance and experience to do the same, but with the help and encouragement of Warley Club members over the last twenty years I am now able to live the dreams of my youth, as I hope the  photos above show.

In fact, just like the current craze for '45 and 33' vinyl records you could say I am a 'retro modeller'!  I find the old faithful models are robust and reliable: unlike some of the more detailed, but more delicate products of today.  You would be surprised to just how good the old models are in terms of basic dimensions, and in my humble opinion have only recently been bettered after fifty years."
